We advise that you prepare all the above ingredients before starting.
You will typically need: a scale, measuring cups, and mixing bowls.
Bolognese Sauce
1 - Place the lasagna pasta in a large baking dish and immerse it in hot water. Let it soak for 50 minutes.
2 - Grease a pan with about ⅛ cup of olive oil and add the ground beef. Cook it for at least 5 minutes, while stirring from time to time with a wooden spoon.
3 - Add the onions, diced carrot, minced garlic, and tomato sauce. Cook for 15 minutes and stir occasionally.
4 - Add water, tarragon, thyme, and cumin to the sauce. Give it a mix, cover it with a lid, and let it cook for 45 minutes on low heat.
Tip: We store our spices in these mini glass bowls from Duralex while cooking.
Bechamel Sauce
1 - While your bolognese sauce is cooking, melt the butter in a saucepan (or a saucier pan) on medium heat. Then, add the flour and mix until well combined, using a whisk.
Tip: All-Clad is the gold standard for professional quality stainless steel cookware.
2 - Whisk in the milk, nutmeg, and black pepper. Pyrex is the gold standard of measuring cups, we love their quality and durability!
3 - Cook for 15 minutes until smooth and thick. Make sure to keep mixing while it’s cooking so the sauce does not stick to the bottom of the saucepan.
4 - When ready, remove the saucepan from the heat, add the Monterey jack to the sauce, and mix until the cheese is completely melted.
Build the Lasagna
1 - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2 - In a baking dish, build your lasagna in layers in the following order: bolognese sauce, pasta, bechamel sauce, and some mozzarella. Repeat the process until your baking dish is full and finish with a layer of bechamel sauce, followed by a generous amount of mozzarella.
3 - Cover the lasagna with a baking lid (or aluminum foil), and bake it at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. If you’d like more texture and crispiness, turn the broil on at the same temperature after 45 minutes, and uncover your lasagna for a last 10-minute broil.
4 - When ready, take it out of the oven and let it cool down for 15 minutes minimum before cutting and serving.
5 - Enjoy!
