If you ever wondered how to make falafel, you came to the right place!

Falafels are known as deep-fried balls or patty-shaped fritters made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both. Falafel is a traditional Middle Eastern food and is commonly served in a pita which acts as a pocket or wrapped in a flatbread. But you can get creative and enjoy falafels as you please.

At How To Cuisine, we enjoy them as patties in burgers, "meatballs" in bolognese pasta, wraps, sandwiches and so much more! You can easily make 100% vegan and gluten-free falafels. They are one of our favorite healthy recipes and allow us to get quite creative with flavors.

This easy curry ginger falafel recipe will take you less than 30 minutes to prepare and the best part: is they are 100% vegan. The only longer part of the recipe is that you will have to soak your dry chickpeas overnight. Note that if you’d prefer to use canned chickpeas, your falafel batter might be more liquid and will require more flour.

You can store this falafel batter in the refrigerator in a sealed food container for up to a week. Then, shape it in patties, balls, or however you prefer them. If prepared in a large batch, you can shape all your falafels and store them in the freezer (baked or raw) for up to 3 months.

We can’t wait for you to try these delicious crispy pan-fried falafels!

Bon appétit!

Crispy Pan-Fried Falafel

1 - Add the dry chickpeas to a large bowl and pour water onto them until they are fully immersed. Then, let them soak overnight (or for at least 12 hours).

Tip: We store our ingredients in these mixing bowls and mini glass bowls from Duralex while cooking. We love Duralex for their quality products and low prices!

2 - Strain the chickpeas using a colander (or a strainer) and set them aside.

3 - Using a sharp knife, cut the onion in quarters and peel off the skin.

Tip: We recommend you use a chef's knife for this task. We love Japanese knives and recommend this quality kit from GLOBAL for home and professional chefs. We also love this reversible cutting board with integrated hand grips from John Boos.

4 - Add the chickpeas, onions, and parsley to a food processor. Put the lid on and pulse until finely minced.

Tip: Here, we are using the excellent Breville Sous Chef food processor.

5 - Add the remaining ingredients to the food processor and pulse until well combined.

6 - Add a generous amount of avocado oil to the bottom of a cast-iron skillet and preheat it on medium heat.

7 - Scoop the falafels using an ice cream scoop and place them into the hot skillet. Then, slightly press them down to create little patties and cook them for about 2 minutes on each side.

8 - Once cooked, remove them from the skillet using a silicone spatula and transfer them to a cooling rack to allow the excess oil to drip.

9 - Enjoy!
